Hormone vs Peptide: Are They the Same Thing?

The words 'peptide' and 'hormone' get used interchangeably in a lot of health content, and that is where a lot of confusion starts. They describe different things. One is about structure. The other is about function.

A peptide is a chemistry term. It means a chain of amino acids linked by peptide bonds, and by the convention used in Lau and Dunn's 2018 review in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, a chain of up to about fifty amino acids. Longer chains are called proteins. The word says nothing about what the molecule does, only what it is made of.

A hormone is a functional term. Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology defines a hormone as a chemical messenger released by a gland or specialized cells into the blood, which travels to act on cells elsewhere. That definition does not care about chemistry. Hormones come in three main chemical families: peptides and proteins, steroids built from cholesterol, and small molecules derived from single amino acids.

The overlap is real but partial. Insulin, a 51-amino-acid peptide, is a hormone. GLP-1, about thirty amino acids, is a hormone. Testosterone and cortisol are hormones but not peptides; they are steroids. Thyroid hormone is made from a single amino acid, tyrosine. Going the other way, many peptides are not hormones. Glutathione is a three-amino-acid antioxidant that works inside cells. Antimicrobial peptides like LL-37 are part of the immune system. And research compounds such as BPC-157 are synthetic peptides the human body does not make; they are not approved for human use, and the evidence behind them is mostly animal studies.

The limit is that 'peptide' describes shape, not role. Knowing something is a peptide tells you how it is built, not what it does or whether it has been tested in people. Questions about any hormone or medication belong with a physician.
